Founded in 1999 by six men, the Langsford Men's Chorus (LMC) has expanded eight-fold, to a regular performace membership of forty-eight. Director Steven SeGraves has been the Conductor of the group since its founding. Fred Rohrbach served as Associate Conductor from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, Roger Smith became the current Associate Conductor of the group. The LMC has presented a vast and varied repertoire at numerous venues in Greater Detroit and the Midwest, at a consistently high performance level, attracting an ever-expanding audience and a devoted following. In 2004 the group was formally organized as a Michigan non-profit corporation for educational and cultural purposes. Its application for federal tax-deductible and tax-exempt status is pending. The Executive Board oversees all activities, and its officers conduct all regular LMC business.
Realizing a dream that few choruses ever realize either artistically or financially, the Langsford Men's Chorus was invited to compete in the 2008 International Musical Eisteddfod, in Llangollen, Wales, United Kingdom. We are honored to have captured the Second Prize in the Male Chorus competition. The Eisteddfod is the first juried international competition for the chorus, and the group represented both the State of Michigan and the United States as the only American men's chorus to participate in this festival, which is widely esteemed as the olympics of choral and vocal music. Besides the competition, which was the main focus of the tour, the chorus also was invited to perform a short concert under the dome in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The chorus also performed in concerts in Great St. Mary's church in Cambridge and at the Methodist Central Hall and Holy Trinity Church in Coventry.
The chorus is open to new singers through a brief voice-placement audition following the first three rehearsals in September and January of each year. In October, eminent clinicians direct our Annual Rehearsal Camp, at Camp Skyline in Almont, Michigan. For audition information, please visit Join LMC.
